Widevine License Server Deployment
Widevine provides its licensees with a Google-hosted Cloud License Service (CLS), which can be used to issue DRM/CAS licenses without requiring the operator to deploy and maintain a dedicated licensing server. By leveraging Google’s infrastructure, content providers can avoid the operational burden of running their own Widevine license server or adopting a third-party DRM/CAS solution. While this approach has provided an easy and cost-free way to get started with Widevine licensing, the service has inherent limitations, particularly in terms of technical support and access to advanced capabilities.
However, Google has announced that the Widevine Cloud License Service will be discontinued on April 13, 2027. Organizations currently using CLS for Widevine DRM/CAS license delivery will therefore need to migrate to an alternative licensing architecture before the service is retired.
It is important to note that this change applies specifically to the Google-hosted CLS service and does not represent the discontinuation of Widevine DRM/CAS. The Widevine platform will continue to be supported and maintained by Google. Accordingly, the required migration is primarily an architectural change in the way Widevine licenses are generated and delivered, rather than a change to the underlying Widevine technology.
As an official Google’s 3PL partner of Widevine DRM & Widevine CAS, KT Altimedia offers Widevine License Server System based on its SDK and it’s tailored to the customer’s service environment. Also provides implementation services that go beyond simply delivering software, covering everything from environment analysis, development, installation, testing, service deployment, to operational support.
By deploying the Widevine License Server System, KT Altimedia enables operators to establish a more flexible, scalable, and self-managed DRM licensing environment, while reducing operational dependencies and enhancing the overall efficiency and reliability of license management and delivery, as outlined below.
